Reframe #6: What would your future self tell you to do today?

Every edition of Reframe helps you shift how you think, show up and get ahead without selling out or burning out. One idea, one insight, one step at a time.

Career clarity often comes in hindsight.

Ever look back at a decision you made a few years ago and think,

“Wow, I’m so glad I did that—even though it didn’t make perfect sense at the time?”

Maybe it was taking a course before you had the job title. Or reaching out to someone you admired, not knowing where it would lead. Perhaps, it was finally setting a boundary that changed how people saw you at work.

That’s the power of future-you.

They have context. Perspective. Hindsight.

They know what mattered—and what didn’t.

But here’s the reframe:

You don’t have to wait five years to access that kind of clarity. You can borrow it right now.

Next time you’re stuck, uncertain, or overthinking, ask:

What would future-me want me to do next?

Not the perfect move or the safe move. The meaningful one.

Here’s how to put that into practice this week:

✅ Zoom out before you zoom in.

Take 10 minutes. Reflect on where you want to be in 1–2 years; not just in role or salary, but in how you feel about your work.

Do you want more autonomy? Visibility? Impact?

That clarity helps you filter today’s decisions:

“Is this helping me move toward that version of me?”

✅ Listen to the signal beneath the stress.

That frustration about being overlooked? It might be future-you nudging you to speak up more.

That restlessness in your current role? Could be a sign you’re ready to stretch, not settle.

Future-you usually doesn’t scream. They whisper. Your job is to tune in.

✅ Make a 20-minute decision.

Big moves can feel intimidating. But future-you doesn’t need perfectly, they need momentum.

So instead of a 12-month plan, ask:

“What’s one thing I can do today that my future self would thank me for?”

A message you’ve been meaning to send or a conversation you need to start.

Maybe, it’s a habit you want to build.

You don’t need to see the whole staircase. Just the next step.

Here’s the truth: Future-you isn’t a stranger. They’re you—with a little more experience, confidence and data.

So, if they had your ear today, what would they say?

Until next time…
